Superman-on-Supergirl

The CW network continues to be in the news even when the season is over for all the major shows. This time it is with the announcement that Superman would be appearing on the first two episodes of the newly acquired Supergirl. The announcement was made via a press release from the Arrowverse’s showrunner Andrew Kreisberg.

“Greg, Ali and I are beyond thrilled to welcome Clark Kent and his slightly-more-famous alter ego to the world of Supergirl. Superman will be appearing in the first two episodes of the new season and we cannot wait to see who next dons the red cape!” said executive producer Andrew Kreisberg.

As a fan of Arrow the announcement made me mad at first because over the last two years on Arrow we have lost the use of the Suicide Squad and Slade Wilson (Deathstroke) due to the movies. Then all the sudden it’s okay for one of the DC Trinity to appear on the small screen. A majority of the mess in Arrow was caused by the restrictions put on by the old heads of the DCU on lesser characters because they didn’t give the fans enough credit that we could keep the movies and the tv shows separate. Now it looks like Geoff Johns and Jon Berg are not going to hold the shows to those same restrictions (Johns and Berg took over the DCU in May 2016).

My anger disappeared quickly and I can accept that they have in a way said ‘hey, we made a mistake here you go’. This led me to start to get excited about all the realistic possibilities for the four shows. So over the four seasons of Arrow, two of The Flash and the one of Legends of Tomorrow there have been hundreds of DC Comic related easter eggs that I as a comic nerd just laugh off because I’m like we will never get that. Most were shoutouts to some of the comic creators on storefronts and mentions of cities where a particular hero or villain lived. I started to think with the cookie jar wide open who would I want and who would fit in. Below are additional Characters that I would like to see make an appearance:

  • Green Lantern- They’ve given enough easter eggs for him over the year let’s see him already
  • Booster Gold- Not a better character in the DC universe for Legends of Tomorrow
  • Blue Beetle/Ted Kord – Another character that has been teased over and over again through the mention of Kord Industries
  • Thomas Wayne- As much as I want Bruce I would take Thomas and be perfectly happy with it because that means he can be the Batman for Flashpoint.
  • Nightwing- Oliver Queen has mentioned before that he’s been Bludhaven. Would add another non-metahuman superhero to the mix.
  • Red Hood- Team him up with Roy Harper get a taste of the Red Hood and the Outlaws.

Above are just a few that I could instantly fit into the Arrowverse.

In conclusion I believe the addition of Superman to Supergirl will lead the first two episodes of Supergirl on CW to be the highest rated shows in the history of the network. My only fear is with the casting, the internet and fans are brutal and the show runners only have one opportunity to get it right. Superman is not my favorite superhero but I understand the pull he has and I am happy to see that the Arrowverse is getting a shot with such a major character.
