Sulu to the bridge! George Takei has lit the internet on fire with his unexpected stance on the recent news that Sulu would be gay in the upcoming Star Trek movie.  Apparently he isn’t on board with the new direction for Sulu and here’s why.

In an interview with THR, Takei states that there has been an open dialog about this for quite awhile. He goes on to say that although he loves the idea of a gay character in Star Trek, he doesn’t necessarily think it should be Sulu.

“I’m delighted that there’s a gay character. Unfortunately, it’s a twisting of Gene’s creation, to which he put in so much thought. I think it’s really unfortunate.”

In various talks with the crew and cast behind the upcoming movie Star Trek Beyond, he had urged them not to go that direction and he recalls their first conversation.

“I told him, ‘Be imaginative and create a character who has a history of being gay, rather than Sulu, who had been straight all this time, suddenly being revealed as being closeted.”

I had posted earlier today my own thoughts on my Facebook page and as you can see, I was 100% on board. Whereas George feels quite the opposite. Perhaps he and I can solve this by means of a duel?
