Constantine fans get ready to get excited and a little disappointed.

The good news is that Constantine will return. The DC Comics drama, which was recently adapted for TV by NBC, will return as an animated series on CW Seed. The news was announced Sunday at the Television Critics Association’s winter press tour.

  • This is what we know so far
Matt Ryan, who starred on the short-lived NBC drama, will voice the character. Yay!
  • The animated series will consist of five or six 10-minute episodes that will premiere during the 2017-18 TV season.
  • Additionally, the 13 episodes of the live-action Constantine drama are available for streaming on CW Seed.
  • Like CW Seeds other animated show, Vixen, Constantine will continue to share the same universe as The CW’s live-action shows Arrow, The Flash, Supergirl, and DC’s Legends of Tomorrow.
  • According to The CW president Mark Pedowitz: “There are no plans–” as this time for another live-action crossover, but did express his interest in seeing Matt Ryan back in live-action form.

My biggest hope for this series, is that they take advantage of not being on television and really stick to the mature themes of Hellblazer. Utilize the medium to it’s fullest potential and don’t hold back.

David Goyer also will be an executive producer on the animated series, along with Greg Berlanti and Sarah Schechter, who also are exec producers on The CW’s superhero slate.

CW Seed is The CW’s digital home for comedy, animation, and hundreds of hours of your favorite shows. That means funny stuff like every Whose Line ever, animated series like DC Comics’ Vixen, and all four seasons of The OC.

Don’t forget, you can currently follow all of John Constantine’s supernatural adventures in his ongoing comic boo series Hellblazer, which is part of DC’s Rebirth relaunch.
