Confirmed: Patrick Stewart will reprise ‘Star Trek’ role in new series

Make it so, Number One! Captain Picard returns

There has been rumors swirling about for months about the impending return of Captain Jean-Luc Picard and now we’ve got confirmation. The new series was announced at a Star Trek convention this past weekend, when Patrick Stewart himself made a surprise appearance.

The new series will not be a reboot of TNG but it’s being described as an “exploration of the next chapter of Picard’s life…” Other details about the series i.e. title, premiere date is being kept secret for the time being. Just a few weeks ago during SDCC, it was announced that Alex Kurtzman, who serves as showrunner on CBS All Access’ Discovery was given “marching orders” to expand the global franchise.

Also, Stewart took to Twitter to share the news with world.

The newly announced series marks the third new Star Trek installment to come to the CBS subscriptions service, joining Discovery and the shortform webseries-type spinoff Short Treks. It looks like CBS plans to expand and grow their on-demand service CBS All Acess by way of Trek. It’s not a bad plan, it seems to be a tried and true strategy. High profile original content has been used by numerous streaming services as a business model, offering viewers fresh content with stars attached. Using popular franchises seems like a logical next step.
